“Our Almost National Bird”

baldeagle_02turkeyBy Jerry Stewart -  Our national bird, the bald eagle, is a grand and powerful symbol of our America. But did you know that the bald eagle was almost not our national bird? 

 

    In 1776 when the Continental Congress appointed a committee to choose a symbol for our new America, Benjamin Franklin didn’t even want to consider the bald eagle. He said it was a vicious predator, and he voted “no”.

    Instead he chose, get this, the turkey. He believed that the turkey should be our national bird because it had played such a big part in saving our first colonists from starving to death. But, despite Franklin’s disapproval, the bald eagle was chosen.

    Now, let’s see, America’s national bird – the turkey? Naaa! I Don't think so. What do you think?
