"This is what the Lord says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, and ask where the good way is, and walk in it. You will find rest for your soul."

Brave Patriot or Egomaniac?

There are some today who like to make fun of one of our founding father, John Hancock, and the way he signed his name so big on the Declaration of Independence. They say he did it because of self-centered pride. But, they're wrong. His large signature was actually an act of unbelievable courage and bravery.

You see, in July of 1776 when Hancock and the other 56 delegates to the continental congress like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin met in Philadelphia, the thirteen colonies were under the rule of England and King George III. What these men were proposing, this idea of America becoming its own free nation, was, in fact, an act of treason, and King George had made it quite clear - anyone caught in the act of treason would be hanged as a traitor.

So, when John Hancock boldly signed his name so big, he was telling the king and all of England that he was literally willing to die for what he believed. After he signed, he was heard to say, "There, I guess King George will be able to read that". What courage!

It was this kind of courage that has given us the great freedom we have in America today. Without the bravery and sacrifice of our founding fathers, we very well could be speaking - with a British accent.
